Executive Summary

Despite its ancient history and one of the earliest plants to be cultivated Hemp fell out of favor in many Western countries during the twentieth century. This was owing to its association with its relation to marijuana. Thankfully common sense prevailed and after many legislative updates in recent years around the world, it has come back into mainstream industrial agricultural and back into the public consciousness. Hemp has rightly earned the reputation as a sustainable crop due to the fact it requires less water, pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizer than most crops commonly produced on an industrial scale. Hemp has, by most estimates, over 25,000 known uses ranging from basic essentials like paper, fuel, and textiles, right through to the production of Cannabidiol (CBD oil) which is a naturally occurring medicinal compound of cannabis that has been used to help alleviate pain, reduce anxiety, and treat acne.

There are plenty more medicinal tests currently ongoing to help reduce symptoms related to cancer and the side effects related to cancer treatment, like nausea, vomiting, and pain. Hemp’s environmentally friendly credentials know no bounds either. Three key reasons for this is carbon reduction, soil enhancing properties and the fact that hemp can be processed into a plastic substitute. It is possible to make alternative building materials with the stalks, such as hempcrete, which removes more carbon from the atmosphere than the carbon emissions required to produce it. Also, instead of depleting the soil of vital nutrients like other crops, hemp revitalizes the soil it grows in, by aerating the soil and through the deposit of carbon dioxide into it. This makes hemp ideal for crop rotation, and the crop that follows in the soil hemp grew in will develop better than if hemp had not been used.

The scourge of the environmental world plastic pollution is destroying our planet by the minute. Hemp can be a non-toxic plastic replacement! Where it takes between 500-1,000 years for plastic to degrade, hemp plastic in the right environment hemp plastic takes around 3-6 months to decompose. Most plastics today contain endocrine disruptors which can lead to the hormonal imbalance in the human body which potentially can stimulate the development of tumors and other defects. Hemp doesn’t contain harmful endocrine disruptors and doesn’t emit toxins into the air during production. Not bad for an eco-friendly crop once considered a nuisance.
